In 2016, there were 6 360 foreign affiliates in Portugal, corresponding to 1.7% of the total number of non-financial companies, a percentage that remained the same from 2015.
Considering the total of the non-financial business sector, in 2016, the foreign affiliates were responsible for 25.6% of turnover, 24.7% of total GVA and 15.1% of persons employed (25.3%, 24.7% and 15.2% in 2015). In terms of annual rate changes, they registered a nominal growth of 3.0% in turnover, 5.5% in GVA and 2.9% in persons employed. For the same variables and by the same order, the national companies grew by 1.8%, 5.3% and 3.4%.
Approximately 75% of foreign affiliates were controlled by companies headquartered in EU member-states, with the emphasis on Spain, France and Germany.
The foreign affiliates with exporting profile concentrated 35.9% of GVA of the overall foreign affiliates in 2016.
