In the first quarter of 2012, residents in Portugal made 3.4 million tourism trips, of which 52.6% had “visit to relatives or friends” as the main reason to travel. Closely linked to this outcome, which has growing importance, the use of free private accommodation (76.2% of the total accommodation) is also growing as opposed to the decline in the use of tourism accommodation establishments. The average duration of the trips made was 3 days and the favourite means of transport used was the private car (80.2% of the total).
