The Portuguese state, including central government and other sectors, owed the country’s banks just a fraction over €59 billion in April, a €287 million increase on a month earlier the Bank of Portugal said Thursday.

Lisbon, June 21 (Lusa) – The Portuguese state, including central government and other sectors, owed the country’s banks just a fraction over €59 billion in April, a €287 million increase on a month earlier the Bank of Portugal said Thursday.

The central bank added that government’s overall debts had doubled since 2008 and its exposure to the banking industry had quadrupled.

In comparison, Portugal's bailout package in the spring of 2011 was for a total of €78 billion.
