Lisbon, June 22 (Lusa) – Portugal produced almost two-thirds (62%) of the world’s cork in 2011, exporting a fraction under 170 thousand tones worth about €806 million the industry association (APCOR) said Friday. Portuguese cork exports were 6% up on the previous year, mainly going to France, the US, Spain and Italy. Corks for bottle stoppers account for about 70% of all the cork exports. The country is not just an exporter of cork, but also imports raw cork-oak bark for processing and these imports were worth about €135 million in 2011. RCR/ADB. Lusa |
