The total number of jobs and paid jobs fell again last year, for the fifth year in a row and there were 622,700 fewer people in work at the end of 2013 than in 2008.
The Portuguese National Statistics Institute (INE) said employment fell 2.8% in 2013, less than the 4.2% seen in 2012, while paid work dropped by 2.6%.
The news is not all bad, however, as the INE said that total employment has started to rise and in the last quarter of 2013 there were 0.5% more jobs than in the 3rd quarter and 1,6% more than in the last quarter of 2012.
