Portugal’s prime minister, Pedro Passos Coelho, said on Monday that the main opposition party (Socialists – PS) has to “offer guarantees” about the trajectory of debt and the public deficit and appealed for an understanding on this matter.
“A broad understanding on this matter would greatly help with Portugal’s perspective of concluding its bailout programme successfully and ensure lower interest rates in the future whenever the country had to roll over part of its financial market debt”, he said.
“PS participation is very welcome and necessary, and they do not have to respond immediately”, the PSD/CDS-PP coalition government leader told reporters at the end of a two-and-a-half-hour visit to the international food and drink fair in Lisbon.
