Consumer price inflation 0.1% in January, half rate of December

Consumer prices in Portugal were all but unchanged in January, for a year-on-year inflation rate of 0.1%, half the rate of December, according to a report from the National Statistics Institute (INE).

The rolling average of yearly inflation for the last 12 months was 0.3%, unchanged from November.

Inflation excluding energy and unprocessed foodstuffs was also 0.1%, the INE said.

Among goods whose prices pulled down the index, the INE highlighted clothing and footwear, prices for which were down 2.6% on January of last year, and transport, down 1.4%.

By contrast prices for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels were up 2.1% on the year, compared with a 0.9% rate in December, while alcoholic drinks and tobacco were up 4.3% on the year, the same as in December.

The harmonised consumer price index, calculated to be comparable with those of other European Union countries, was also up 0.1% on the year, with a monthly increase of 1.4%, according to the INE.
