António Costa, the mayor of Lisbon, is to lead Portugal’s Socialists into next year’s general election campaign on a strong anti-austerity platform after mounting a successful challenge for the leadership of the country’s main opposition party.
Mr Costa, 53, emerged the clear victor after a bruising four-month contest for the leadership, winning 69 per cent of the vote in the first primary election to choose a prime ministerial candidate to be held by a Portuguese party.
