Lisbon, May 3 (Lusa) – The cork industry broke all records in 2016, with €937.5 million in exports, 4% more than in 2015, confirming the confidence of companies and investors, the Portuguese Cork Association said on Wednesday.

The industry exports 90% of the production to 133 countries, with bottle stoppers still the ”premium product”, accounting for 72% of all exports the association said.

Then come building materials with 25% and other products with 3%, though the new applications represent “an elevated growth potential”, it added.

In 2016, cork represented 7.5% of all Portuguese exports.

The success in 2016 is considered to be a consequence of the effort “to renovate processes and products, of investing in innovation and the policy of conscious, sustainable international communication over the last 15 years”.
