Portugal: Country has 3rd largest debt level in EU – Eurostat

Brussels, July 22 (Lusa) – Portugal had the third largest debt level amongst European Union (EU) countries in the first quarter of 2016, Eurostat said on Friday.

In the second quarter of the year Portugal’s debt was 128.9% of its gross domestic product (GDP) compared to 129% in the previous quarter and 130.2% in the same quarter of 2015.

Debt levels were highest in Greece (176.3% of GDP) and in in Italy (135.4% of GDP), Eurostat said. The overall debt rate in the EU in the first quarter was 84.8%, down from 84.8% in the fourth quarter of 2015.
