Restoration has dominated her work since she set up a small architectural practice with Tiago Ilharco, her husband, in 2007. “Portuguese attitudes to old buildings are changing,” she says. “They are increasingly being valued as a heritage worth preserving.”
This change in outlook, which is also driven by pressing economic reality, is rapidly altering Portugal’s city centres. Urban regeneration is now the main force behind the property market, construction and tourist accommodation.
