September construction costs up 0.8% on year; maintenance costs down

The index of costs of housing construction was in September up 0.8% on the year, while the index for prices for maintenance and regular housing repairs was down 0.1%, according to a report released on Friday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

According to the INE, the indices had in August been up 0.8% on the year and down 1.0% on the year respectively.

The index of component materials, which is part of the housing construction index, was up 0.3%, while that for manpower was up 1.7%.

Construction costs are seen as an indicator of activity in the sector, which until the global financial crisis and subsequent recession was one of Portugal’s most important.
