Portugal’s second largest high street bank, Banco Espírito Santo (BES) lost a staggering almost €3.58 billion between January and June 2014, compared with what used to be seen as a whopping €237.4 million in the same period in the first half of 2013.
Following recent plummeting stock prices, this is much more than the €2 billion or so the markets say the bank is worth.
