Mário Soares (1924-2017)

The former President of the Republic and Prime Minister Mário Soares died on January 7, at the age of 92, after 25 days of hospitalization in a hospital in Lisbon.

Mário Soares was a central figure in the country’s return to democracy in the 1970s and served in the highest positions in the Portuguese political landscape: he was Prime Minister, President of the Republic and Portuguese Member of the European Parliament among other State functions. Mário Soares was also the founder and first leader of the Socialist Party and was Minister of Foreign Affairs, where he negotiated the Portuguese entry, in 1986, into what is now the European Union.

A champion of civic liberty, Mário Soares fought the Salazar regime in the 1960s and early 1970s, and halted the seize of power by the hard line Communist Party through democratic elections held after the return to democracy.
