The investment from Brazilian citizens during the first quarter of 2017 surpassed the total obtained in 2016

According to the Foreigners and Borders Service, Brazil is the second country, after China, which has invested more in the Residence Authorization program for the Investment Activity (ARI) in Portugal. In the first quarter of 2017, investment from Brazilian citizens surpassed the total obtained in 2016, totalling 127 million euros (156 visas), 8% more than in the whole of last year.

China is leading the list with 3 376 visas distributed until April, followed by Brazil with 403, South Africa with 180, Russia with 173, and Lebanon with 99.

From October 8, 2012, the date of its creation, until April of this year, were allocated 5 003 ARI: two in 2012, 494 in 2013, 1 526 in 2014, 766 in 2015, 1 144 in 2016 and 801 this year.

Portugal won the Eurovision

On 13 May, Salvador Sobral won the 62nd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest in Kiev, with the theme “Amar pelos dois”. The Eurovision final was disputed by 26 countries at the International Exhibition Center in Kiev, Ukraine

The Portuguese singer won in both public and the jury voting, summing a total of 758 points in the final result, an unprecedented score for Portugal.

The last best Portuguese result in the Eurovision Song Contest was obtained by Lúcia Moniz in 1996, with the song “O meu coração não tem côr”. This was also the last time Portugal won a place at the top 10.

Government adopts new legislative package of the Capitalize Program

On 18 May, the Council of Ministers approved a new legislative package, under the Capitalize Program. The aim was at “improving efficiency in corporate restructuring and insolvency processes, financial leverage of companies, and to boost the capital market.”

This new legislative package meets the objectives of promoting business investment and helping to capitalize companies. Those two areas constitute an important part of the National Reform Program proposed by the Government.

Among other measures, this law establishes the Investment Societies for Economic Development, a subtype of investment Company that aims to facilitate SME access to the housing market. Simultaneously, the diploma proposes to update the securities regime, recognizing a new type of security representing short-term debt called the Short-Term Debt Certificates.
