Pope Francis visited Portugal

Pope Francis visited Portugal on May 12 and 13 for the Centenary of the Apparitions of Fatima. The leader of the Catholic Church met with the President of the Republic of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, shortly after the welcoming ceremony at Monte Real Air Base. On the 13 May, the Pope received the Prime Minister, António Costa, and then visited the Basilica of our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima, where the tombs of the three shepherds. Then later presided over the ceremonies of May 13, during which the ceremony for the canonization of the two Portuguese blessed, Francisco and Jacinta, was celebrated.

President of the Republic of Portugal visited the Republic of Croatia

The President of the Republic of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, visited the Republic of Croatia between 18 and 19 May, where he was received, in Zagreb, by his counterpart, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović. The purpose of this visit was to strengthen bilateral ties in the same year it celebrated 25 years of diplomatic relations between Portugal and Croatia. In cultural context, the “Azulejos” exhibition was inaugurated at the Arts and Crafts Museum in Zagreb .The President of the Republic of Portugal offered a fado concert with the artist Cuca Rosetta at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb.

Government tightens scientific cooperation with Germany

A bilateral meeting between Portugal and Germany took place on May 22 at the German Geoscience Research Center in Potsdam, Germany, attended by Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor and the Secretary of State for Education and Research of the German Federal Government, Georg Schütte, along with representatives of scientific organizations and funding agencies attended the meeting. Cooperation between the two countries is part of the agenda on Atlantic Interaction to create an International Research Center in the Azores, as well as under the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA) program. The cooperation also extends to the area of industrial innovation between German and Portuguese public and private institutions, notably within the Fraunhofer Portugal program.
