President of the Republic makes state visit to Mexico
Between 16 and 19 July, the President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa made an official visit to the United Mexican States, accompanied by the Minister of Economy, Manuel Caldeira Cabral, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Teresa Ribeiro, the president of the Portuguese Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade (AICEP), Luís de Castro Henriques, and members of the various parliamentary groups.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was received by the President of the United Mexican States, Enrique Peña Nieto, at the National Palace in Mexico City. The Mexican President praised the Portuguese President, saying that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is “one of the main promoters of Portugal’s economic recovery.”
In this visit, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was accompanied by representatives of 41 Portuguese companies and together with the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Mota-Engil, António Mota, inaugurated the company’s headquarters in Mexico. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also opened the business seminar between Portuguese and Mexican companies called “Mexico and Portugal – A Common Journey”.
During this State visit, the President of the Republic also received the keys of Mexico City and met with the local Portuguese community, estimated at 2 500 people.
President of the Chinese Parliament visits Portugal
Zhang Dejiang, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China, paid a three-day official visit to Portugal.
President Zhang Dejiang was welcomed by his Portuguese counterpart, Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, the President of Assembleia da República (Portuguese Parliament). During this visit a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation was signed between the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China and the Assembly of the Republic, with the aim of strengthening the relations of friendship and cooperation between the two institutions.
During this visit, President Zhang Dejiang was also welcomed by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and by the Prime Minister, António Costa, in addition to having maintained contacts with the Chinese community living in Portugal.
President of the Republic awarded Prince Aga Khan
President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, awarded the spiritual leader of the Ismaili community Shah Karim al-Husseini, the Prince Aga Khan, with the Grand Cross of the Order of Freedom.
This award takes place around the time of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Prince Aga Khan, the 60th anniversary celebration as a hereditary imam (spiritual leader) of the Muslims Shia Imami Ismaili. The award given by the President of the Republic followed a ceremony where Prince Aga Khan was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the Nova University of Lisbon.
The Henrique de Mendonça palace in Lisbon was the location chosen to host the world headquarters of Imamat Ismaili, an institution led by Prince Aga Khan who works in the areas of scientific research and cooperation for social development in the fields of health, education, culture, among others.
