The civic centre of the city, it is surrounded by an architectural ensemble of considerable aesthetic merit, where the buildings’ granite facades are combined with tiles and wrought iron. It was redecorated in 2007 to restore its past beauty and its traditional role as a favourite point for people to meet and wander around. Here we can find symbols of the history of Póvoa de Varzim, such as the Paços do Concelho (town hall) building, the Monument to Eça de Queirós (one of the greatest Portuguese novelists) who was born here, Póvoa’s Pillory and the old Bandstand.
