On the orders of Archbishop Diogo de Sousa (1502-1532), the "New Gate" was opened in 1512, thereby establishing the basic axis of intramural circulation. The monumental arch, still visible today, was erected with the financial assistance of the crown in 1772-73, during D. Gaspar´s prelacy.
