Bridge, Shrines and Mills

Paredes de Coura
Description
The bridge over the Cavaleiros River, with a deck bridge set on a true arch, was once the site of the Guerra de Bico, a popular and bloodless protest to a burial in the parish church’s churchyard that ended when the troops left the grounds. The fast flowing river, a tributary of the Coura River, flows over a narrow, rocky riverbed and along woody banks. The shrines feature glazed-tile panels and are housed in a niche sculptured in a stone block crowned with a straight cornice. The mills are rectangular in shape, with dry stone masonry walls and a gabled roof.
