Casa do Santo Velho

Fafe
Description
The Casa do Santo Velho is one of the oldest noble houses in Fafe, listed as a public interest building. It dates back to the late 17th century. What strikes visitors the most in this building is its grand gate with a coat of arms opening to the patio in front of the house. The chapel is dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Carmo and was built at a later period. The façade has a triangular pediment with a coat of arms on the tympanum. In the second half of the 19th century its owner, José Leite Pinto Saldanha de Castro, built another house which he called Casa do Santo Novo, which today houses the Municipal Cultural Centre, and the older house was then known as Santo Velho.
