The original chapel was built in 1697 by Captain Gaspar Pinheiro de Carvalho. It was enlarged in 1734. It has baroque style features and used to have fraternity. The chapel suffered large improvements through private donations, in the 60s and 70s of the XX century.
In 1978 a new body was built and connected with the existing one, by project of the architect Alfredo Moreira da Silva. Near this sanctuary, some XVIII century elements of the old Via Crucis can be found. The Senhora do Amparo festivities take place on the last Sunday of July.
