CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA DA ESTELA

Póvoa de Varzim
Description
The old parish church, which was once located near the brook called Rio Alto, was moved here in 1800.

The building was completely restored between 1982 and 1985.

It is a neoclassical temple, with a longitudinal plane, which had a single nave, to which recent restorations have added two lateral aisles, in the area adjacent to the transverse arch.

The front is bordered by a bell tower on the left side (of the observer), crowned by a triangular pediment, lined with white tiles and decorated with three blue and white records: one with the image of the Immaculate Conception and two scenes from the life of Christ.

The presbytery presents an altarpiece and carved neoclassical furniture and painted coffered ceilings (with scenes from the life of the Virgin and decorative vegetal and geometric motifs).

The neo-baroque altarpieces in the body of the church, like almost all images, are works of the second half of the 20th century. In the area of the lower choir, there is an interesting canvas that represents the Souls of Purgatory, with Christ Crucified and the Saints, from the 17th or 18th century.
