The Empresa das Lousas de Valongo (Valongo Slates Company) is dedicated to the slate extraction and processing. It is located near the "Pedreira da Milhária" in the village of Campos, being the oldest quarry in activity. It has 15 hectares of mining area and extraction for several years. The quarry extraction associated with the company dates back to 1865, when the British firm The Vallongo Slates & Marbles Quarries Company Limited, started the intensive extraction in the mine of Galinheiro, Valongo, currently disabled. It supplied the UK and the United States with slate roofs, floors and walls, isolating material and stones for billiards, which are still manufactured. Currently, the company is also dedicated to the production of cleaved, sawed and polished plates. As a result of large investments it opened the largest extraction of slate in Portugal, a much mechanized labouring. It is intended that 90% of its production is exported to markets such as Germany, Denmark, Spain, United States, Japan and England. Visits by appointment.
