The Figurado de Barcelos is another certificated handmade product, that it is today one of the largest handmade productions of the municipally. This production began as a subsidiary activity, made of small portions of clay for children to play. At the beginning the main figures made were people or animals with whistles or musical instruments at the bottom like harmonicas. Later, with the devaluation of the pottery in the market, most of the producers stopped producing pottery pieces and they dedicated exclusively to the production of the Figurado, representing figures and scenes of rural life and from religious and fantastic imaginary.
The Figurado from Barcelos is different from any other kind of production of Figurado, with unique characteristics in their used shapes and colours, resulting from the environment the craftsmen lives in.
The most produced pieces are from religious character (saints, nativity, devils, Christs ) and day-to-day scenes (jobs, animals, people, festivals ). It mustnt be forgotten the famous Rooster of Barcelos which is the biggest icon.
