Lugar do Desenho – The Júlio Resende Foundation was begun with a collection of about two thousand drawings that the painter Júlio Resende has amassed during his career, which began in the 1930s.
It is a private institution officially recognised as being of public benefit.
While the preservation and dissemination of the important collection of the Foundation’s patron deserve great attention, its cultural and educational activities define its main objectives.
At the same time as the permanent exhibition of the collection in a purpose-designed space that is accessible to the public, there are temporary exhibitions, concerts, conferences, and specialist seminars, courses and workshops in the various fields that the Foundation decides to study.
The concept of drawing behind the institution’s name (Lugar do Desenho) is viewed in its widest and most correct sense, covering all creative fields, and for this reason it is seen as an open, multidisciplinary research space.
In being a place for pluridisciplinary dialogue in the field of contemporary culture, the Foundation is distinct amongst many other institutions.
Located in Greater Oporto, it is a place with a national and international dimension, interacting culturally with the community, with Portuguese-speaking countries and those to whom culture has given a voice.
