Markers for the Demarcation of the Douro Region of fortified

Peso da Régua
Description

Located in the parish of Galafura, these markers include a set of similar examples of the same type, made in granite and listed as being of Public Interest in 1946. They are important to the whole winegrowing region of the Upper Douro listed by UNESCO as World Heritage under the general heading “Alto Douro Wine Region”.

The region is geographically bounded along the middle section of the Douro Valley and some of its tributaries, between Barqueiros and Freixo de Espada à Cinta, and is roughly subdivided into the three sub-regions of Lower Corgo, Upper Corgo and Upper Douro.

In 1757, with the aim of guaranteeing the quality of the wine and fixing the prices, the Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro, on the initiative of the Marquis of Pombal, placed 201 makers’ markers, which were added to four years later with a further 134 markers. They are made out of granite, and are engraved on the square side facing the road with the phrase "Feitoria 1758" or "Feitoria 1761, by which the export wines were identified.
