Metal Bridge

Peso da Régua
Description
The metal bridge was built in 1872 by order of the king Dom Luís I as a road crossing over the Douro River and deactivated in 1949 due to the poor condition of its wooden bridge deck. At the time, the joint intervention of the Municipality of Peso da Régua and the Estradas de Portugal (Portuguese Roads Authority) allowed for the reuse of the metal structure within a unique urban and landscape context, more in line with its preexisting characteristics and in connection with the highly polarizing footpath network on both the Douro River high and low levels.
