The area of the Montesinho and Coroa mountains, were chosen to be a Natural Park because they gather the appropriate conditions for that purpose. It covers an area of 75,000 hectares, including about 9,000 inhabitants spread over 92 villages, covering the municipalities of Bragança and Vinhais.
Fauna, is very rich, there is a wide variety and diversity of habitats, where we can find some endangered species.
The dominant vegetation consists of oaks, chestnuts, heathers and rock-rose woods, among others.
Montesinho Natural Park is one of the largest protected areas in Portugal classified in 1979 (Decree Law 355/79 of 30 August). It is possible to point out several reasons that led to its classification:
Natural landscape of interest,
Activities in open air, camping, climbing, hiking, direct contact with nature.
The traditiconal economy is part of the natural ecosystems.
