By the sculptor Eduardo Tavares, the monument was inaugurated on the 30th of December 1966 on the occasion of the celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of "Criminoso por Ambição” (Criminal by Ambition), the first novel of writer Ferreira de Castro.
The bronze sculpture represents and honours the Emigrant, a paradigmatic figure in the writer's work and simultaneously symbolizes the social condition once experienced by many inhabitants of Oliveira de Azeméis.
