Marco de Canaveses
Description
The Benedictine Convento of S. João Baptist (St. John the Baptist) has received enclousure in 1123 given by Queen D. Teresa and confirmed by king D. Afonso Henriques (1109-1185). The church was consecrated years before, in 1065, by D. Sisnando Viegas, the Oporto` s bishop. The contents of the Convent and Church were transfered to the Convent of S. Bento da Vitória in the late XVI century after being subject of wide range events. The convent and Church were abandoned for twelve years, when the abbot Frei Jerónimo Freire decided to reoccupy it making a campaing of reconstruction work, which brought the distortion of the original romanesque and gothic outlines. From this campaign resulted, among others things, the reconstitution of the Convent Church which altar and its decoration executed in gilt woodwork.
