In an area where since 1168 it has been building the history, it is based today a museum centre with representation from some of the greatest names of the painting in Portugal as Vasco Fernandes (Grão Vasco), Bento Coelho da Silveira or Pascoal Parente. We speak about the Monastery of Santa Maria de Salzedas, which creation can be confused with the nationality itself and that the Religious Orders extinction law would vote to the abandonment in 1834.
The inclusion in 2009 of the Monastery in the project “ Varosa Valley" developed under the auspices of the Regional Northern Culture Directorate, led to the recovery of the building and the need to frame the estate reminiscent through the creation of a museum center that received the most significant pieces and served as a site interpretation centre.
So, the exhibition is developed around three cores considered central to the context of the treasures of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Salzedas, including painting cores from the sixteenth century (Grão Vasco), seventeenth century (Bento Coelho da Silveira) and eighteenth century (Pascoal Parente), to which are added the sculpture cores and historical book, architecture (consisting of architectural elements of the medieval building) and jewelery (especially the reliquaries of São Bento and São Bernardo).
Classified of National Monument in 1997, the Monastery of Santa Maria de Salzedas is open to the public from October 26, 2011. Visiting it is an opportunity to revive the past and evoke the successive generations of Cistercians who, over the centuries were contributing to the history of the
region and the affirmation of the Douro wine region as excellence.
