Roman/Medieval Bridge of Rubiães

Paredes de Coura
Description
The Roman/Medieval bridge of Rubiães was listed as a public interest building. It is entirely built in granite and has been the subject of valuable discussions about its origins. Whereas the Portuguese Institute of Architectural Heritage argues that the double ramp deck of the bridge opposes the horizontal trend of Roman bridges, others believe that the pillar bases and some of the deck slabs may be well prepared Roman stones, which confirms that this bridge precedes the medieval times. The trestle deck sits directly on the three true arches, the middle one being the largest. On both margins, the old road section leads up to the bridge’s ramps.
