The “Ázere” Monastery

Arcos de Valdevez
Description
The monastery of Benedictine origin is fenced in 1125, the gothic building was erected during the 14th century then suppressed a hundred years later. In the middle of the 16th century it is reduced to a parish church, then structurally modified during the modern and contemporary period. The space still features traces of the medieval occupation. On the ground floor, to the north, pops out an arch of granite ashlars; to the south, a skylight offering a column with two back to back imposed cylinders, showing decorated shoulder pads with horizontal parallel frames and the pillar’s base decorated with vegetal motif. On the upper floor are identified, as well, medieval elements such as the bow down, shoulder pads and acronyms in some ashlars.
