The Costume Museum

Viana do Castelo
Description
This ethnographic museum was created to exhibit and study the identity and folk traditions of the Alto Minho region, in particular those of Viana do Castelo, as costume is the main exponent. Different types of folk costumes may be admired here: Working garments, the outfits worn on Sundays or to festivals, and the black wedding dresses embroidered with glass beads. The museum holds regular temporary exhibits on the different features of the costumes and on local rural life and culture. A unique collection of traditional gold jewellery from the Eduardo Freitas Foundation may be seen in the museum’s vault (the building formerly housed the Bank of Portugal). The museum was certified and became part of the Portuguese Network of Museums. It encompasses a network of smaller ethnographic museums, for which it received an honourable mention in the Portuguese Association of Museology awards in 2012.
