«THE LAND AND THE SEA»

Póvoa de Varzim
Description
Route «The Land and the Sea»
Many many years ago, the sea moulded a plain that, to the north of the city of Póvoa de Varzim, is occupied by the parishes of Aver-o-Mar, Aguçadoura, Navais and Estela. This ancient maritime plateau left us a sandy soil where, with much skill and effort, the local people mainly indulge in horticulture.
Further inland, the Serra de Rates divides the council into two distinct geomorphological areas. In the central belt of the council, along a “corridor” which comprises the parishes of Argivai, Beiriz, Amorim, Terroso and Laúndos, we find an area of transition between the coastal plain and the inland area. The amount of woodland increases, the land gradually renounces its maritime legacy, becoming heavier, and the farming changes.
