Probably built in the late 13th century, the “Miranda”’s Monastery is a traditional Benedictine specimen, this religious institution contributing to social and economic expansion by acting throughout the Middle Age.
It was fenced by D. Sancho the 1st in 1207 and protected by D. Afonso the 2nd and the 3rd, but in 1417 they are no longer religious. The church still preserves part of the Romanesque chapel of the 13th century, integrated in a fertile valley environment, of strong agricultural livestock appetence, probably the basic reasons for fixing the religious community.
During the 16th century, the notable monastery ruin and in 1639 the monks’ dormitory were menacing to crumble, therefore, between 1677 and 1680, the church’s extension began as well as a general improvement work. In 1693, an outbuilding was constructed, including the gate and its respective arms’ coat; then five years later more general works of conservation and renovation of the temple and monastic building were undertaken. A stone carved Presbytery was erected in 1780.
With the extinction of the religious orders in 1834, it ceases its monastic use, then passed being considered as civil heritage.
