The Museological Center of Lanheses

Viana do Castelo
Description
The Museum of Lanheses opened in August 1st, 2008 in the old primary school of Lanheses, a site that also hosts the headquarters of the Parish Council. This centre is separated in two parts: one dedicated to pirogues found in the River Lima - the country’s oldest nautical traces – the other one being dedicated to the ceramic traditions. The neighborhood had a strong craft activity related to ceramics, pottery and mining (mainly tin). There are many traces of Celtic and Roman ceramics and ancient documents, which refer to “bake oven tile” or “earthen threshing floors”. Two pirogues dating from the 3rd/2nd century B.C. where discovered in the Parish of Lanheses in 2003. They were showing activities in the ancient River Lima. The pirogues of theme being one of the oldest of the country’s archaeological findings are also highlighted at this museum. Permanet Exhibitions - “Pottery and Ceramics Lanheses” and “The Craft of the River Lima”.
