Castro de Nossa Senhora da Assunção – Hill Fort

Monção
Description
This Hill fort, as many others in the region, survived through the centuries, against the wheather and the effects of the human presence, to reach the present as a strong testimony, left by our ancestors.

At the top, in Castro, parish of Barbeita, we find this forested hill with some granitic outcrops, located about 270 meters high. It is a hill fort, partly excavated, dating from the V century BC to the I century AD. Its name derives from a nearby small chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Assunção built in the XVI century,  near which some prints engraved on rocks were found.

Previously, this Hill fort with other riverside pre-roman settlemensts such as Nossa Senhora da Graça, controlled the river Minho course  and its affluents.

Nowadays, there are signs of round and rectangular buildings, which formed the “castrejo acropolis” protected by three lines of walls. Some of these buildings are going to surprise you for their good condition, and it is not hard to imagine the houses standing, surrounded by romans making here pieces of pottery, iron and bronze weapons and millstone to grind cereals ...

The beautiful landscape provided by this hill fort is worth contemplating in particular over the Minho Valley and over the river Mouro.
